Jessie Hui

thoughts are just clouds, important clouds

Jessie’s work reflects on the practice of self-care. In moments of cautiously choosing what’s best to do, she often hesitates and overthinks. Between discipline and
indulgence, how much care is too much? When is it being gentle, and when does it become harsh?

This new body of work visualises Jessie’s seemingly insignificant struggles in making caring decisions. Each piece takes a closer look at her crowded, conflicting mind: whether to resist sleep because the day feels unfinished, to stay in bed when there’s so much to do, to deliberate too long over what to cook, or to feel overwhelmed by endless possible drafts for a painting. Often the body has already decided while the mind resists, yet most of the time she is caught between thoughts, taking perhaps too long to sense what feels best in the moment.

One way to quiet this overthinking is to see each thought like a cloud passing by gently, though sometimes offering crucial hints for self-understanding. With a humorous and playful aesthetic, Jessie reveals the ongoing, complex practice of caring for oneself.
