Felix Atkinson

Presence

Felix Atkinson is a Thai-Australian artist living and working in Naarm/Melbourne. Felix’s figurative-based paintings are created through personal experience and informed by being with others in the world, capturing an emotional range that is not always definable yet intuitive and deeply felt. What is important to the artist is to create paintings that are honest, intimate and deeply rooted in both the past and present. The sensitivity contained within the paintings, dynamic in nature, allows space for the viewers’ own feelings and memories to permeate through the images being created.

Self-taught as a painter, Felix’s emotional palette and gestural brushstrokes create paintings that display a range of stylistic influences, yet contemporary in their approach of subject matter that is at once deeply universal whilst intensely personal.

Presence creates spaces of autonomous self-reflection and explores how these spaces are navigated by the body. The body becomes the point of departure; its dimensions and the space it occupies, the narratives it holds and how these unfold around it. The reinterpretation of bodily presence evokes the queer or gender non-conforming body, allowing for a tender consideration of how we perform gender and identity.
